Adenoids are lymphoid tissue at the back of the nasal cavity, part of the immune system. They help fight infections by trapping bacteria and viruses, producing antibodies and white blood cells. Similar to tonsils but not visible without special instruments, adenoids filter pathogens from the nose and mouth. Most prominent in children, they shrink by adolescence and are often barely noticeable in adults.
