Ear Tubes

Ear tubes are often required in patients — usually children — with recurring ear infections, persistent fluid behind the ear drum causing hearing or speech difficulties, or significant ear paint from poor equalization of the middle ear space.

The surgery is performed through the ear canal with the use of a microscope. A small incision is made in the ear drum and a pressure-equalizing tube is placed.

The advantages of having ear tubes are a decreased number of infections, easier treatment of ear infections using only topical ear drops, improved hearing ability, and decreased or alleviated ear pain.
